Nkombo Island is in the middle of Lake Kivu in Rusizi District, the western province of Rwanda in Africa. It is an island of great beauty as it borders the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is highly populated, there is a high birth rate and the people are highly impoverished.
Leaving the mainland to Nkombo Island you have to use a boat which takes an hour or so to get to the nearest landing site. On the Island, the only means to travel is by walking. If you are lucky the government official will give you a ride on his motorcycle.
Many girls here drop out of school because of financial constraints and poverty. Early pregnancies are very common, with huge numbers between ages 13 to 18 years. Many have been taken advantage of by male family members and others lured with false promises of marriage and money. They face shame, rejection, and stigma from families and society.
Cyizere Girls is seeking ways to support and reintegrate them back to society. We aim to provide
- Counseling.
- Vocational skills.
- Advocacy for them to access medical care, nutritional programs, reproductive health and prevention programs.
- Their immediate needs which include clothes for them and their babies, medical care, nutritional meals for the babies and toiletries.
Cyizere Girls is committed to bringing hope to teen mums and their babies. It’s a call to show grace; we all are saved by God’s grace. Jesus is at the Center of our ministry and gives us the capacity to be a blessing to others.
